IMO approves net-zero regulations for global shipping

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) took a significant step forward at its 83rd session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) by approving a legally binding framework aiming to achieve net-zero carbon emissions from shipping around 2050.


The framework, named "IMO Net-zero Framework", is the world's first regulation that combines mandatory emission limits and greenhouse gas pricing across the industry. It was approved by the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee from 7 to 11 April 2025, is expected to be formally adopted in October 2025 and will come into force in 2027. The new regulations will apply to large ocean-going vessels of 5,000 gross tons and above, which account for 85% of carbon emissions from international shipping.

EU Releases Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations

On January 22, 2025, the European Union published the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40 (PPWR), repealing the EU Packaging Directive 94/62/EC and amending Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 and Directive (EU) 2019/904. The Regulation will enter into force on February 11, 2025, and will apply from August 12, 2026 (unless otherwise provided). This landmark regulation aims to address the growing problem of packaging waste and drive the packaging industry towards a sustainable transition.
